.pro Domain Names
43 registrars compared — cheapest from $2.49 at Sav
Delegated in 2002, .pro was one of the few gTLDs designed for a specific audience: credentialed professionals. But in 2015, it threw open its doors, shifting from a niche badge of certification to a generic extension for anyone who wants a hint of expertise.

From Credentialed Elite to Open Registration
When IANA delegated .pro in May 2002, it carried a unique condition: registrants had to prove they were licensed professionals — architects, lawyers, doctors, accountants. That era ended on 16 November 2015, when restrictions were lifted and anyone could register. The Qualification Challenge Policy (QCP) remains in place, allowing third parties to challenge registrations that falsely claim professional status. But in practice, .pro is now as accessible as .com, just with a veneer of credibility.
Why Professionals Stuck With It
Despite opening up, .pro still attracts the crowd it was built for. The IANA record lists actual uses: information technology consultants, real estate professionals, financial and accounting experts, engineers, lawyers, communications specialists, and medical practitioners. A .pro domain signals 'this is my business, not a hobby' — even if the registry no longer checks your license. For solo practitioners and small firms, it's a middle ground between a generic .com and a country-code like .co.uk.
The Registry Behind the Curtain
The sponsor is Identity Digital Limited, a major registry operator in the post-2012 gTLD era. Though .pro predates that round, it ended up in the same portfolio as scores of newer extensions. Identity Digital runs the technical side — the registry website is www.identity.digital. For a TLD with a long history, that corporate stewardship is typical: older gTLDs like .pro have changed hands as registry operators consolidate.
A Price Spread That Says 'Shop Around'
Pricing for .pro is all over the map. Among the 43 registrars selling it, the cheapest — [Sav](/registrars/namecheap) — charges a fraction of what the most expensive asks. That extreme spread (the low end is roughly a tenth of the high) is a red flag to compare carefully, especially when renewals come due. $2.49 gets you in the door, but $22.04 might be where the sticker shock hits. $12.17 is the middle ground if you don't want to chase the cheapest.
The Flavor Distinction Among Service Extensions
Consultants now face an alphabet soup of choices. .agency, .services, .solutions, and .consulting all target the same kind of business. The difference is flavor. .pro carries professional gravitas and a hint of 'certified' history, even if that era is gone. The others are more generic — any services firm could take .services without implying accreditation. For an established practitioner, .pro reads as 'expert.' For a broader business, the alternatives may fit better.
