Domain Age Checker
Find out how old any domain name is.
Why Domain Age Matters for SEO
Domain age is one of many signals search engines consider when evaluating a website's authority. Older domains have had more time to accumulate backlinks, build trust, and establish topical relevance.
While Google has stated that domain age itself is not a direct ranking factor, older domains tend to correlate with higher authority because they've had years to build genuine credibility and content.
When purchasing a domain for a new project, checking its age and history can reveal whether it was previously used for spam, which could impact your SEO efforts.
This tool reads the creation date from a domain's RDAP registration record and calculates how long the domain has been registered.
Creation date in the RDAP record
The domain age is derived from the `created` field in the RDAP response for the domain. RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the modern replacement for WHOIS and is used by registries and registrars to publish registration data. The creation date is the moment the domain was first registered in the current registration system. This is a factual data point that the tool reports directly, without interpretation or estimation.
What the tool does not read
The tool reads only the RDAP creation date from the current registration record. It does not consult archival sources such as the Internet Archive's first-seen dates, nor does it infer anything about a domain's historical content or backlink profile. For extensions whose registry does not publish a creation date in RDAP, the tool cannot report an age. Those TLDs are excluded from the tool's coverage, and the tool will not display a value for them.
Coverage across 3,431 extensions
The checker works across 3,431 top-level domains, with dedicated pages for each TLD at /tlds. For each extension, the RDAP endpoint is queried directly, so the result reflects the registry's own data. Extensions that omit the creation date will show no result. If you need to check the registration date of a domain under an extension not covered here, you can use the /tools/whois-lookup tool to view the full RDAP record and inspect the creation date manually.
Related checks and available comparisons
After you know a domain's age, you may want to verify other registration details. The /tools/whois-lookup tool shows the full RDAP output, including registrar and name servers. The /tools/dns-lookup and /tools/ssl-checker let you inspect DNS records and certificate validity, which are independent of registration age. If you are evaluating multiple domains, the /tools/bulk-domain-checker can process a list, and the /compare page lets you view registration data side by side. For a broader view of registrars and TLDs, see /registrars and /tlds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does domain age affect SEO?
Domain age itself is not a direct ranking factor, but older domains tend to have more backlinks, trust, and content history, which indirectly improve rankings.
How do I check when a domain was registered?
Use a domain age checker or WHOIS lookup tool. These query public registration databases to find the original creation date and expiration.
Can I find a domain's history?
Yes, tools like the Wayback Machine archive historical website snapshots. WHOIS history services track ownership and registrar changes over time.
What happens when a domain expires?
Expired domains enter a grace period (30-45 days), then a redemption period (30 days), before being released for public registration or going to auction.
