.com vs .net vs .org — Which TLD Should You Pick?

Choosing between .com, .net, and .org is one of the first decisions you'll face when registering a domain. Each extension has a distinct history, purpose, and set of perceptions that can influence your online brand. And in 2026, newer TLDs like .io, .dev, and .ai are viable alternatives worth considering.

.com — The Commercial Standard

.com (commercial) was one of the original seven TLDs introduced in 1985. It was intended for commercial entities but quickly became the default choice for virtually any website. Today, .com domains account for roughly 37% of all registered domains worldwide — over 160 million registrations.

Best for: Businesses, startups, personal brands, and any project where maximum recognition matters. If the .com is available, take it. Users instinctively type .com when guessing a URL, which gives you free type-in traffic that other TLDs don't get.

Pricing: .com registration ranges from $9.15 (Cloudflare) to $15.99 (Hover), with most registrars charging $9-13 for the first year. See our full pricing comparison.

.net — The Network Alternative

.net (network) was originally designated for organizations involved in networking technologies — ISPs, infrastructure companies, and the like. Today, it's the most popular alternative when a .com is taken, with over 13 million registrations.

Best for: Tech companies, SaaS products, and projects where .com is unavailable. It carries a slightly technical connotation that works well in the right context. DomainNameServices.net is itself a .net domain — and it works perfectly for a domain industry resource.

Pricing: Slightly more expensive than .com at most registrars. Ranges from $10.11 (Cloudflare) to $17.49 (Hover).

.org — The Organization Choice

.org (organization) was intended for nonprofits and has maintained that association. Wikipedia, Craigslist, and many open-source projects use .org. It conveys trust, community-mindedness, and a non-commercial mission.

Best for: Nonprofits, communities, educational projects, and open-source initiatives. Using .org for a commercial business might confuse visitors about your entity type and could undermine trust if users expect a nonprofit experience.

Pricing: Comparable to .com. Ranges from $9.73 (Porkbun) to $14.99 (Hover).

Newer TLDs: .io, .dev, .ai, .app

The TLD landscape has expanded dramatically since ICANN began approving new extensions in 2012. Several have gained real traction:

.io — Hugely popular with startups and tech companies. Originally the country code for British Indian Ocean Territory, it's been adopted by the tech community as "input/output." Premium pricing ($29-45/year) but strong brand recognition in tech circles.

.dev — Google's TLD for developers. Requires HTTPS (HSTS preloaded), which is a security plus. Priced at $10-18/year, it's affordable and immediately communicates a technical audience.

.ai — Exploding in popularity thanks to the AI boom. Originally Anguilla's country code, now the default choice for AI startups. Expensive at $52-75/year but carries significant brand value in the AI space.

.app — Another Google TLD, also HSTS-preloaded for mandatory HTTPS. Popular for mobile applications and SaaS products. Priced at $11-19/year.

SEO Implications

Google has repeatedly stated that TLD choice does not directly impact search rankings. A .net or .org site can rank just as well as a .com. John Mueller from Google has confirmed this multiple times.

However, the indirect SEO benefits of .com are real. Users are more likely to click .com results (higher CTR), more likely to remember and type a .com domain (more direct traffic), and more likely to link to a .com domain naturally (more backlinks). These user behavior signals do influence rankings over time.

For newer TLDs, the SEO playing field is level. A .io or .dev domain won't rank worse than .com for the same content — Google treats them equally in its algorithms.

Pricing Comparison

Here's what each TLD costs at Cloudflare (our cheapest registrar at wholesale pricing): .com — $9.15/yr, .net — $10.11/yr, .org — $9.93/yr, .io — $33.98/yr, .dev — $10.11/yr, .ai — $58.00/yr, .app — $11.18/yr.

Our Recommendation

If you're building a business or personal brand: choose .com if available. It's the safe, universally recognized choice. If .com is taken, evaluate your audience: .io and .dev work well for tech products, .ai is ideal for AI companies, and .net is a solid general-purpose fallback. Reserve .org for genuine nonprofit or community projects.

Don't let TLD choice paralyze you. A great product on a .io domain will always outperform a mediocre one on a .com. The domain is the address — the content is what matters.
