From the same New Orleans address since 1998 — and ICANN-accredited from the early days of commercial domain registration — Directnic is the rare registrar that survived the 2000s consolidation wave with its independence intact.

From the First Wave of ICANN Registrars

Founded in 1998 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Directnic received its ICANN accreditation in the original wave of commercial registrar accreditations following ICANN's 1999 founding. For context, the company has been operating continuously since before the dot-com bubble burst, before Google's IPO, and before most of the registrars currently in our dataset existed. The independence is unusual: most pre-2000 registrars were eventually acquired or rolled up into larger holding companies during the 2000s and 2010s, while Directnic stayed under its original ownership and operating model.

How a Registrar Also Becomes a Registry

Beyond standard registrar operations, Directnic operates as a registry for several niche TLDs — meaning the company runs the technical infrastructure that other registrars connect to in order to register domains under those extensions. The dual role (registrar + registry for some TLDs) is unusual and grants Directnic a structural position that pure registrars don't have: revenue from both retail customers and other registrars in the industry. For domain customers, this matters less than the operational stability it implies — a company running registry infrastructure has different uptime requirements and different staffing patterns than a pure-retail registrar like Namecheap.

Steady Pricing Across Both Years

At $15.00 for a .com registration with $19.19 renewal, Directnic's pricing follows the old-school pattern: what's quoted at registration is approximately what's quoted at renewal, without first-year-discount-trap mechanics. The 1102 TLDs supported lean toward the established gTLDs and major ccTLDs rather than the obscure new-gTLD end of the spectrum; the cheapest entry point is .bond at $1.25. Customers who shop on first-year promotional prices will find better headline numbers at Hostinger, but Directnic's consistency over a five-year hold often produces a lower all-in cost when the math is run against our comparison tool.

When Old-School Is the Selling Point

For customers who value institutional continuity — small businesses that registered with Directnic in 2002 and don't see a reason to migrate, agencies that have built workflows around the Directnic dashboard, anyone with strong opinions about consolidation in the registrar industry — the unchanged operational model is the entire reason to stay. For everyone else, the dated dashboard, the lack of integrated services beyond domain registration, and the absence of modern features like DNSSEC self-management push customers toward more current alternatives. Directnic doesn't compete on features and isn't trying to; the customer fit is narrow but durable.
