Monolith Registry's Civic Experiment
In the 2012 new gTLD round, ICANN opened the door to hundreds of niche top-level domains, and Monolith Registry LLC walked through with .vote. The registry's parent, Identity Digital, already managed a portfolio of lifestyle and community-oriented domains, but .vote was aimed squarely at democracy and public participation. It wasn't a brand play — it was a proposition: a domain that signals civic intent. Since February 2014, the string has been live in the root, waiting for campaigns, civic tech startups, and advocacy groups to claim their corner of the ballot box.
A Domain That Runs on Trust, Not Just Names
Registering a .vote domain is a statement, and that statement is about credibility. Unlike sprawling extensions like .com or the generic .band and .business, .vote narrows its audience to the civic sphere. That focus comes with a trust obligation — a campaign site on .vote reads as more legitimate than a random subdomain, but it also carries the weight of expectation. The Public Suffix List treats .vote like any other suffix, yet its semantic charge is distinctly political. For voter information hubs or election watchdogs, the domain can be a trust shortcut, provided the registry's policies keep the namespace free of abuse.
The Price of Democracy Is Not Uniform
Shopping for a .vote domain means confronting a wide price spread) across the 40 registrars that sell it. It's not a budget extension — the lowest advertised rate at Spaceship is $20.90, but renewal costs can climb to $147.99, and the average sits around $65.15. That volatility is common among niche gTLDs from the 2012 round, where registries set their own pricing with little competitive pressure. For a domain that's typically part of a short-term campaign — think 'votejohnson.vote' for an election cycle — the renewal price matters less than the launch cost. Still, the spread means shopping around is its own kind of civic duty.
Cousins, Not Clones
The .vote namespace has a kin in .voto — a Spanish-language sibling also run by the same registry — but the two aren't duplicates. .voto serves Spanish-speaking communities while .vote aims at the English-centric global audience. Beyond that, .vote's closest cousins are the other community-oriented gTLDs: .band, .business, .cafe, and .church all came out of the same 2012 round with similar ambitions, each carving a niche for a specific activity or identity. Unlike .voto, which shares .vote's registry, these other extensions are run by different operators, so their policies and prices diverge. If .vote is the ballot box, .band is the arena and .church is the pew — all places where community gathers, but with very different rituals.
