.info Domain Names
44 registrars compared — cheapest from $1.99 at IONOS
Delegated in 2001 as one of the first seven new generic top-level domains, .info was meant to be the internet's information aisle — but it has become something more like the fallback shelf.

The 2001 Bet on a Generic Information Space
When .info was delegated in June 2001, it arrived with seven siblings — a cohort of new gTLDs meant to relieve the crush on .com. The idea was straightforward: a domain explicitly for informational websites, open to anyone with no restrictions. The Wikipedia entry notes the intended use was 'informational websites,' but the actual use turned out to be far broader. There were no charter restrictions, no eligibility checks, just a four-letter string that sounded like what you were looking for. In practice, .info became a general-purpose namespace, often used when the desired name was taken in .com or .net. The grand informational vision faded into a simple availability play.
Identity Digital's Quiet Stewardship
Today Identity Digital Limited runs the registry, a role it inherited through a series of corporate handoffs that trace back to the original registry operator. Identity Digital is a major back-end registry services provider, the kind of company that runs dozens of extensions behind the scenes. For .info, that means the TLD gets enterprise-grade infrastructure but not much evangelism — .info is a workhorse, not a marketing priority. The registry's own site reflects this: technical specs, policy documents, and not much fanfare. Stewardship here is about keeping the lights on and the DNS stable, which for a TLD that's been active since 2001 is arguably the most important job of all.
The Cheapest Fallback in a Crowded Field
Among the general-purpose TLDs, .info sits at the budget end of the pricing spectrum. [IONOS](/registrars/ionos) offers it at a price that undercuts most of its peers, and with 44 registrars carrying it, the market is competitive enough to keep prices low. The spread is extreme — the cheapest registrar charges about a tenth of what the most expensive does — which tells you something about how the TLD is positioned. It's a commodity. You register .info when the .com is taken, when the .net feels too technical, when you just need a URL that works and doesn't cost much. The low price is both a selling point and a signal: this is not a premium space, but it's a reliable one.
UDRP and the Absence of Rules
.info follows the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP), the same arbitration system that governs .com, .net, and .org. Because there are no registration restrictions — anyone can grab any available .info name — the UDRP is the primary backstop for trademark holders. There's no sunrise period, no local presence requirement, no purpose-based checks. The freedom is double-edged: it makes .info easy to use for legitimate informational projects, but it also means cybersquatting is a constant concern. The absence of restrictions was a deliberate choice in 2001, meant to keep the namespace open. Two decades later, it's the reason .info remains a viable, unfussy option — and the reason it occasionally shows up in UDRP filings.
