Carrying a .degree is a statement of academic achievement, but this TLD’s real story is its corporate stewardship—and the surprisingly wide price gap for what is essentially a naming badge.

Dog Beach, LLC and the 2012 New gTLD Wave

When Dog Beach, LLC picked up the registry duties for .degree, it was riding the ICANN 2012 new gTLD expansion, a program that let brands and entrepreneurs launch hundreds of niche suffixes. .degree was delegated on May 22, 2014, a relatively early entry in that flood. Dog Beach is no stranger to domain infrastructure—the same company runs several other new gTLDs—but unlike some pure registrar ventures, its focus has been on building out a portfolio of lifestyle and credential-oriented names. The company's registry site pitches itself as a way to lend instant context to a web address.

A Credential, Not Just a Keyword

Most people hear “.degree” and think of the document they framed after four years of exams. That’s exactly the point. This TLD lets universities, online course platforms, and even individual tutors signal an academic or professional credential before a visitor clicks. It’s a far more specific claim than wandering onto .com or .org. But it's not limited to formal diplomas—a consultant could use it to highlight their expertise, or a career coach could claim a name like career.degree. The tension is that the registry doesn't verify that you actually hold a degree, so the trust signal is more about branding than vetting. That places it in the same family as .academy, .education, and .school, but with a sharper, more personal edge.

Where It Fits Among the Education Cluster

The 2012 round spawned a whole campus of education-related TLDs, each with a different shade of meaning. .education is broad enough to cover a state department or a tutoring app; .school skews K-12; .academy conjures elite training grounds; and .training is all about skills, not diplomas. .degree is the most outcome-focused of the bunch—it’s what you get after the learning is done. That makes it appealing to someone who wants to brand an alumni network, a credentialing service, or their own coaching practice. It is also notably less crowded than those siblings, which means more names are available for registration—though the registrar count here (40) suggests it’s still a niche play.

The Extreme Price Spread Under the Surface

One of the quirkiest things about .degree isn’t its purpose but its pricing. The gap between the cheapest and most expensive registrars is enormous—the low end runs a tenth of the high end. In practice, that means a registrant could lock in a year for as little as what Sav charges (look for the $7.49 renewal terms to be sure) or, at the other extreme, pay well over $47.20 if they land on the wrong seller. This kind of spread isn’t unusual for new gTLDs, where registrars set their own margins, but it’s a reminder to shop around. The renewal rate at Sav—the $41.80 mark—is especially worth checking, because some budget registrars lure you in with a low first year and then hike the renewal.
